We have heard throughout lives: “Right place, wrong time or Wrong Place, right time Or Any combination of place or time being right or wrong” Have you ever purchased something that needed to be assembled? You lay all of the pieces out, check them against the instructions, gather the necessary tools and start putting the pieces together. If you don’t put the pieces you are trying to join together in the right position then that screw that holds it together will not go in properly nor will it hold the item together. You will end up with a final project that is not solid and could cause it to collapse later after a little wear and tear. Have you ever tossed and turned in bed while trying to find that perfect spot that will allow you to drift off to lala land. You wiggle, you squirm, you move left, right, add pillow, subtract pillow, place one leg out of the covers, and you continue to move until you find that perfect position. Once the perfect position is achieved, you are then able to drift off into a comfortable and restful sleep. The point I am trying to make is…positioning counts! The proper positioning will allow you to get where you are trying to go and to achieve the results you are trying to accomplish. We can have all the tools and talents that we need but if we have not positioned ourselves for success and greatness then we stay in the same state that we are in. Expand your mind. What books are you reading? Have you written your goals down? What are you actively doing to pursue those goals? Do you have a personal vision and mission statement written down? Have you found someone who is already doing what you want to do? Have you asked them to mentor you? Numbers has always been easy for me. It’s a God-given talent that I have. I became a great accountant not because I had the skill set needed to be one but because I positioned myself to become great. I went to the Controller and I asked could I shadow her on projects, I asked for extra work, I stayed late, I took the opportunities to grow in my field, I kept asking for stuff until I had more knowledge than they knew what to do with me. So do you know what they did? They created a position for me in their company! Now did the others in my department like it – absolutely not! – but I didn’t care because I was positioning myself for my next level. When I left there, I went straight into a management position at the next company. Then I started my own accounting business a few years later. I POSITIONED MY GREATNESS!!!!!!!!! There are many ways that you can properly position yourself for success. Here are four of my favorites: 1. Get your mind right – How do you see yourself? How you see yourself will shape how others see you. Perception is other people’s reality no matter how much you want to jump up and down and say, “That’s not me”! 2. Change your attitude – If your attitude stinks, then so will you! Are you self-centered, do you have a big EGO; are people happy to see you walk into a room or out of it? Check yourself before you start interacting with others and if need be go back to number 1…and get your mind right. 3. What do you look like – Appearances matter. In society, unfortunately, you are judged by how you look. Are you clean looking, wrinkle free, do you have stains on your clothes? When I would go on job interviews I had one brown power pantsuit. It made me feel confident and look good. All I had to do was go into the interview and sell myself but I had moved appearance out of the way. First impressions do matter. Remember the saying, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” Always strive to look your best! 4. Words and Actions – This is simple…let your words line up with your actions. People will listen to your words but they will watch your actions. If they don’t line up then you become less believable each time. Now this brings me to my 6 Ps…Proper Positioning Prevents Piss Poor Performance! Get yourself properly positioned so that you can achieve all of your goals and dreams. Did you notice that the four tips I gave you all starts with YOU being and becoming the best YOU that YOU can be? You can’t sit around and wait for things to happen to you and propel you into your next level. You have to work…so get to work! I leave you with something that Pastor T.D. Jakes said to me at a conference years ago, “No one hires you to make you rich.” Take this information and get working towards what you want to do in life. Remember if you are not working towards your dreams, someone will hire you to work theirs. Be blessed… |
